I know we discussed this on the old dev forums, but I figured I'd re-open the topic to the new team members and future players alike.
Now, I'll be the first to say that I am not a fan of melee combat in vanilla RO or it's mods. The bayonet system just doesn't feel good or right. Stabbing someone is a chore, and nearly impossible, leading to "circle battles" when two enemies square off in melee combat, running around in circles hoping to hit the other.
Now, we can't be sure what the melee system will be like in Heroes of Stalingrad; however, I will reference the best melee system I've played in any FPS. Call of Duty 4 and Call of Duty: WaW.
The melee system is quick, easy to use, and deadly. I think that if there was a hybrid of RO's realism approach, and COD's simple auto-lock melee system, there would be room to have a solid melee system that I think may be lacking in RO's next installment.
As we all know, WW1 saw ferocious hand to hand combat, so I think it is important to implement it properly into our game.
Please, put your own opinions or ideas in this thread, so that we can hopefully develop a useable system.

Yes, COD4-like system sounds good.
The main requirement: there must be no any "charging" for bayonet stab. One fast click should be instant death for anyone who stand before you. |

yeah i agree. i have almost rage quit so many times on RO when I used the bayonet on a german guys back, and he would turn around and shoot me...its bullshit sometimes srsly as long as I am on this team, a bayonet stab is death (but if in arm or leg maybe not) lol

Downloaded the single player demo. Now I know what you're talking about. If you check out the thread we have about executions and crawling wounded in the dev ideas, I think this game should be mentioned because of the "impaling" option.
Kettch do you have Half Life 2? If you do you should download a mod called Pirates, Vikings, and Knights 2. It's got a pretty neat melee system as well.

Many have been complaining RO melee system...but I actually like it. Call me crazy! :D
I agree, it's not perfect system...refining could be needed. But still, charge system is more accurate than instant-kill.
It's quite fun also, cause it's rather difficult to master. And when you master it, it's more effective up-close than hip shoot with bolt-action...
Melee is struggle... :)
But, of course this is trained in "realism-groups"...so, most public players may not enjoy it at much :/
Haven't tried COD4 thought... |

have you guys played the latest medal of honor? I like how if you are close enough to an enemy you will basically lock onto him and stab him, you can keep stabbing him as he falls and even when he is on the ground (dead). sometimes one stab isn't enough to make him fall. if you are not close enough to lock on and stab him you can still take him out with a slash.

I personally like bayonet charges and RO's melee combat, but a bayonet in the heart should always be a instant kill, so I might see your point. I kinda liked Medal of Honor: Vanguard's melee system. You hit someone once and they might have their screen get a little disoriented so you had a chance to get another hit if the first one didnt kill, but they could still fisted back while they're screen was like that. Which is still like RO, but it gives the guy who hits first a bit more chance to not get shot in a way.

RO1 and RO2's melee is much better than CoD's instaknife. In CoD you basically pull your knife out with a third arm. RO1 and RO2's melee is probably my favourite in any game, I do prefer RO1's over RO2's though. |
